Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
Every learner identified as having Additional Learning Needs (as defined by the ALN Code for Wales) will have an Individual Development Plan (IDP). The IDP is a person-centred document that outlines the unique needs, aspirations, and required support for each learner. It replaces previous systems such as Statements of SEN, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and Learning and Skills Plans to ensure a unified and inclusive approach to support.
At Olchfa School, we strive to work collaboratively with parents/carers and pupils. These plans are reviewed regularly to ensure that they remain relevant and effective as learners progress through school. We are dedicated to ensuring that every pupil feels supported, empowered, and able to access a full curriculum tailored to their needs.
Support for Learners through Inclusive Teaching Approaches
We understand that not every learner who needs some additional support in learning will require an Individual Development Plan (IDP). Many pupils can thrive with adjustments made through inclusive teaching practices.
At Olchfa School, we embed a range of inclusive approaches across the school, including:
-
Differentiated lesson planning to accommodate diverse learning styles
-
Flexible seating arrangements and classroom layouts
-
Regular use of visual aids and interactive teaching resources
-
Opportunities for small group work or additional teacher support within the classroom
-
Open communication with parents and carers to ensure continuity between home and school
Our aim is to ensure that all learners feel valued and supported, creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Supporting Transition from Primary School
We recognise that the move from primary to secondary school can be a challenging time for some pupils, especially those with Additional Learning Needs or who are neurodivergent. To make this transition as smooth as possible, we offer a structured programme of support, including:
-
Enhanced Transition Visits: Pupils are invited to additional visits to familiarise themselves with the school environment, meet key staff, and experience some taster lessons.
-
Key Worker Introductions: Learners with an IDP or who may benefit from additional support are introduced to the school’s ALNCo and support team early in the process.
-
Primary Liaison Meetings: Our ALNCo works closely with primary schools to share information about each pupil’s needs and effective strategies for support.
-
Parent Information: We welcome visits to the school by prospective pupils and their families from Year 5. We are always happy to offer private and confidential meetings to support parents/carers in making informed choices about secondary school applications.
Our transition support aims to build confidence and ensure that every pupil starts their secondary education feeling prepared and supported.
Neurodiversity Support
We recognise and celebrate the strengths and unique qualities of neurodivergent learners, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological differences. Our school provides a supportive environment that values neurodiversity and adapts teaching approaches to suit individual learning profiles.
Our staff are trained to understand and accommodate the needs of neurodivergent pupils, using strategies such as:
-
Sensory-friendly learning spaces
-
Visual supports and structured routines
-
Regular communication with parents and carers
-
Access to assistive technology and specialised resources
The Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ND) Pathway
For learners requiring support with routes to formal diagnosis of ASD and/or ADHD, we collaborate with the local health board’s ND pathway to ensure timely identification, intervention, and access to external specialist services when needed. The pathway provides a clear framework for understanding and addressing the needs of neurodivergent children and young people, offering guidance on appropriate assessment and support.
We also maintain strong partnerships with local authorities, educational psychologists, and healthcare professionals to ensure holistic support for neurodivergent learners.
The ND pathway is a health-based assessment pathway that accepts referrals from schools. The referral process is very complex and the current waiting times are lengthy. If you require further information, please contact Mr Robert Williams (Assistant Headteacher /ALNCo) for an appointment to discuss this in more detail.
Specialist Teaching Facility
From September 2025, Olchfa will host a Specialist Teaching Facility for children with significant learning difficulties on behalf of the Local Authority. Admissions to the STF are decided by the Local Authority.
