Year 9 iCommunicate Term 1

What is on the curriculum?
Good to know

In iCommunicate English, pupils begin the year with a drama unit : 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare. This develops their knowledge of Shakespeare's writing and times, enabling them to discuss relationships with maturity and to analyse language in depth. Following this, pupils undertake a short Media Studies unit in which they analyse audio-visual texts, such as music videos. We finish the term by studying a short novel: 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. This unit develops pupils' understanding of society at the time in which the novel is set as well as their reading skills.

Most pupils will study a Shakespeare play at GCSE in English so this unit extends an important part of their knowledge and skills. Media Studies is offered as a separate subject at GCSE so this unit helps pupils make informed choices later in the school year.
In iCommunicate Cymraeg, pupils begin the year with a focus on healthy living that allows them to build on their previous knowledge of the Welsh language. They move on to look at a range of challenges that young people might face today, with the use of real-life issues and contexts aiding their learning of another language. The vast majority of pupils take GCSE Welsh (Second Language) at Olchfa, so their work in year 9 is an important preparation for this.

In iCommunicate Spanish, pupils build on their previous knowledge of the language in the unit 'Self and Relationships'. They build their confidence and revise key vocabulary and grammar by discussing themselves and family.

Spanish is offered as a separate subject at GCSE so this year's work helps pupils make informed choices later in the school year.
