MESSAGE FROM THE PUPIL WELFARE OFFICER (SCHOOL NURSE)
|
|
If you have any uniform in good condition that you would like to donate to school, I would be very grateful. I will then recycle the uniform.
If a pupil requires medication during the school day, please remind pupils they must leave the medication with me in the medical room. I can then make arrangements with the pupil the time they need to attend my room to take the required dose.
Pupils are encouraged not to carry medication around with them.
Any pupil who has an injury is on crutches etc MUST see me for a risk assessment as soon as they are back in school.
If a pupil is unwell during the school day we have a procedure in place for pupils to follow. Pupils should contact myself in the first instance and if I am not available they can go to T3/Newid.
Have a wonderful summer, stay safe. Kind regards. Mrs Hopkins

Jana and Janine in 7SM recently designed a creative and imaginative festival idea for Miss R Davies in English - Worldwide Destruction. Not only did they create a 3D model, they also presented a fantastic accompanying advertising video and Dragons' Den-style presentation that they delivered in front of the class brilliantly and were voted by their peers as the best group. Well done both!
|
Isobell Bramhall in 7RD recently won 2 gold medals at the Welsh Acro gymnastics champs in Newport and will be representing Wales in the British Champs in May. What a fabulous achievement! Go get 'em, Isobel!

Ruby in year 8 has been selected to represent Girl Guiding Cymru in the Summer of 2023 World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, as one of only 9 girls from across Wales. This is a very exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity for Ruby. More than sixty thousand Scout and Guides from around the world will join her for a twelve-day festival to celebrate, learn new things and have fun.

Alma, Year 8
Alma has been travelling around recently presenting her refugee speech and has presented at the Waterfront Museum. In attendance were the Children's Commissioner for Wales and cabinet members who were all in awe of her!
In June, Mr Hampson (PGW for Year 8) took Alma to his former primary school to have a "dress run" as she'd never presented outside Olchfa and once again she was absolutely outstanding. Alma has also presented to year 8 forms, Mr Davies, Headteacher, Mr Salmon, Deputy Headteacher during form sessions, and she presented at the last full governing body meeting of the year.
Well done Alma, you are a brilliant ambassador for the school.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing at Olchfa
At Olchfa, we care about the emotional health and wellbeing of all members of our school community. The views of pupils and teachers, parents and governors have helped us to further develop the approaches we take to support each other. With the support of representative focus groups of pupils and teachers, we have been able to develop a dedicated area on the school website for pupil wellbeing and staff wellbeing. Over the course of the next academic term, we also aim to develop a parent wellbeing area. In September, we will publish our emotional health and wellbeing plan. We hope that you find the information on the website helpful and we welcome any feedback that you have. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this work to date.

Maths in Sport Poster Competition
Great work in iCalculate by Suraiya, Eric, Hafsa, Ava and Ruby In Year 9 and Harry, Zac, Tazkia, Ibrahim, Simra, and Muhammad in Year 7. These pupils created great posters to enter the competition 'Maths in Sport' organised by The Institute of Mathematics and its Appilcations. They all made a great effort to show the connections between Maths and their chosen sport.
We submitted the posters of Hafsa and Ruby in Year 9 and Muhammad in Year 7 to the national competition ran by Maths Careers (IMA) and we are really proud to announce that Ruby and Muhammad were runners-up and were awarded a certificate and a badge. Well done!

SCHOOL PRODUCTION - INTO THE WOODS
|
|
|
Olchfa school students had a long awaited return to the theatrical stage this month after a 29-month wait since the previous production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical ‘Into the Woods’ was a hugely ambitious production which brought together students from Year 10 -13 in the cast and crew, Year 8-13 in the orchestra. The production played for four performances in South hall during the second week of July.
This year’s production continued to build upon the success of Wizard of Oz by using a professional costume company and live music performed by a mixture of students and staff. The original production was due to be staged in March but due to a surge of a new Covid variant in December, the decision was made to postpone the show until after the Summer examinations. The students worked incredibly hard on this production throughout their own periods of examinations and absence, and we are all incredibly proud of their final achievement. Mr Colborne.

On Tuesday 28th June, thirty pupils, along with Mr Protheroe and Miss Conners, attended a Mathematical workshop day at Swansea University. The day, run by the Further Maths Support Programme, was also attended by many other schools from all over Wales. The pupils enjoyed a host of tutorials and workshops covering themes such as ‘Can Mathematics cure Cancer?’, ‘Decision-making Mathematics’, and even ‘Maths in the Simpsons’. The final lecture of the day was delivered by Mr Thomas Wooley of Cardiff University, who explained the use of Probability in improving your chances of winning a game of Monopoly or rock, paper scissors!

Eco Committee News
We have installed new bird feeders near the front entrance to school, which are being enjoyed by the local birds.
We have purchased and put new bins all over the school and pushed classroom recycling around the school. Our caretakers have installed rubber stoppers to stop the local wildlife from removing rubbish from our outdoor bins which has reduced waste being blown around the yards. We have created an Eco survey that has been shared with all pupils. The results are below:
